Last year, I wrote a post about our Social Sharing feature. This feature allows you to add icons or links in your message that your contacts can use to share the message via various social media outlets (Facebook, Twitter, etc.). In recent weeks, there has been some confusion as to how each of the social media outlets displays the content you add for the social sharing links (i.e. the Title and Summary). In this post, I’ll show you how each social media outlets handles the display of your Social Sharing link content.

When you add Social Sharing links to your message using the WYSIWYG editor, you will be asked to specify a Title and a Summary. Each social media outlet handles the display of the Title and Summary differently, and sometimes doesn’t use them at all. Below is a screenshot displaying how each social media outlet displays the Summary and Title when a contact clicks a social sharing link from your message.

Facebook

Twitter

LinkedIn

MySpace

Digg

Obviously for this post, I have used a generic Title and Summary. When you create your Social Sharing links, you’ll want to come up with a creative Title and Summary that best applies to the Social Sharing links you are adding. If you have any additional questions, feel free to leave them in the comments section below.

When I sign up to receive emails from a business or organization, I do so with intent of receiving interesting, informative, and intriguing information. Along similar lines, when I friend someone on Facebook, or follow someone on Twitter, it is because I find them to be interesting, intriguing, and/or insightful. So you can bet that if I get an email from one of the interesting/intriguing/informative organizations I follow, I am going to want to share it with my friends and followers. The same goes for the other side of the equation. If one of my interesting/intriguing/insightful friends receives a cool email from an organization they follow, I will want to hear about that as well.

My hope is that the organizations who send these interesting/informative/intriguing emails use Bronto (and not just because I work here!) With the Fall 2009 release, we have introduced a Social Sharing feature which allows your contacts to easily share the messages they receive from you with various social media outlets. So let’s dive in and take a closer look at Social Sharing in Bronto.

Inserting Social Sharing Links Using The WYSIWYG Editor

There are a couple of different ways to add Social Sharing links to your message, the easiest of which is adding them using the WYSIWYG editor.

To insert Social Share links:

Click the Insert Social Share Link button in the WYSIWYG editor.

Specify a title in the Title text box that will be used on the sharing page for a given social network. Depending on the type of social network, the title may be displayed in different ways, or not all. See the screenshots below to see how each social networking site displays the title.

Specify summary text in the Summary text box. Depending on the type of social network, the summary may be displayed in different ways, or not all. See the screenshots below to see how each social networking site displays the summary.

Click the checkbox next to the social media outlet that you want add an icon and corresponding link to in your message. The results of clicking on each of these links are also described below. Currently you can choose from:

Facebook

Digg

MySpace

Twitter

Linkedin

Click Insert.

What Your Contacts Will See When They Click On A Social Share Link

Facebook

When a contact clicks on the Facebook icon, they will be taken to the Facebook login page. Once they login, they will be taken to the Facebook Sharing page. The Facebook Sharing page will contain a preview and a shortened version of the URL linking to the message. In this case, the title and summary you specify in step 2 and 3 are not displayed.

Digg

When a contact clicks on the Digg icon, they will be taken to the Digg Login page. Once they login, they will be taken to the Submit A New Link page in Digg. In the case of Digg, the Title and URL are used. The Summary is ignored.

MySpace

When a contact clicks on the MySpace icon, they will be taken to the MySpace Share page. This page will contain a preview of the content being posted, a URL linking to the message, the title specified in step 2, and the summary specified in step 3. The contact will need to login to MySpace before they share the message.

Twitter

When a contact clicks on the Twitter link, they will be taken to the Twitter Login page. Once they login, they will be taken to the What Are You Doing page on Twitter. The new tweet text box will be populated with the summary specified in step 3, and a shortened URL linking to the message.

Linkedin

When a contact clicks on the Linkedin link, they will be taken to the Linkedin Login page. Once they login, they will be taken to the Linkedin Share News page. This page will contain a URL to the message, the title specified in step 2, and the summary specified in step 3.

Social Sharing is yet another way we make it easier for you to get your message out there. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to leave them in the comments section below.
